THE SHATTERED REALMS SERIES
FRACTURED
Human healer Isla buries her grief in her work, until a mysterious new illness sweeps through her village, resisting all known treatment. Vaelin, a battle-hardened fae warrior, watches the illness spread among the fae, their own magic turning against them.
Driven by a prophetic vision of a healer in Terravern, Vaelin arrives unannounced, demanding that Isla is the key to finding the cure. He is everything Isla resents - emotionless, entitled, and a member of the fae court responsible for her parents’ deaths. But when the illness begins claiming lives faster than she can save them, Isla is faced with a choice: stay and watch everyone she loves die, or try to save them all.
Together, Isla and Vaelin navigate treacherous, unforgiving realms as well as an undeniable attraction between them threatening to unravel everything they’re trying to save. Soon, they learn the illness is one symptom of something ancient and inevitable, a calamitous reckoning that was always meant to break the world.
Fans of the REALM BREAKER (Victoria Aveyard), THE BRIDGE KINGDOM (Danielle Jensen), and WAR OF LOST HEARTS (Carissa Broadbent) series will love this story of slow-burn romance, found family, and an epic quest grounded in the difference between fate and choice.
“Threads of her hair shifted in the breeze that wound through the room. His eyes dropped to her arm, to the hand splayed across his chest, his breathing coming easier as the dream faded into blackness. It was disarming… how easily she quieted the storm inside him.”
THE REALMS
Terravern
-
Home to elements of wind and light, the mountainous Vaelora is ancient home to the fae and the greatest realm by both geography and influence. Its borders are protected by a ring of mountain peaks, calm valleys within home to sprawling vistas of the fae courts. The palace of the Starfire Fae, built in to the tallest mountain, stretching from ground to peak, sits high on the horizon, looking down upon the expanse of the realm from ocean coast to mountain range. Vaeloran society is courtly, ostentatious, and full of traditional customs, tenuous alliances, and lasting rivalries.
Vaelora borders Terravern to the South and Dunovar to the Southwest, with the Northwestern-most mountain range brushing the border of Askeldrath. North of Vaelora, across swift ocean currents and massive whirlpools sit The Isles, drenched in a mysterious fog, resistant to even the most powerful of windwielders.
-
Five fae courts reside throughout Vaelora, each specializing in an elemental magic of their own. The firewielders of the Fireborne Court are welders, weapons masters, and fierce warriors. The earthwielders of the Earthborne Court manipulate flora, fauna, and the very bedrock of the Earth, driving agriculture in the realm. The Earthborne are known to be proficient healers. The waterwielders of the Waterborne Court manipulate the waves and tame the seas as tidecallers, ruling the currents and coastlines. Low-lying fog and wind blanket and batter Vaelora, but are kept at bay by the windwielders of the Windborne Court, who manipulate the air as both shield and weapon as fae warriors. Finally, the Shadowborne Court’s shadowielders cast light and shadow alike, making excellent spies and calling other unsavoury professions their own. The Starfire Fae can manipulate all magical elements, in addition to their mysterious ancestral Starfire magic.
DUNOVAR
-
Home to the element of Earth, Terravern is a verdant, forested region inhabited by humans. Shot through with rivers and shimmering lakes fed from the ocean, the realm’s lush climate makes it ideal for agriculture, foraging, and timber harvesting. Terravern exports food and lumber in abundance owing to its temperate climate and strong trade relationships across the realms. Terravern is riddled with ancient forests, thick with towering trees, wild plants, herbs, and animal life ripe for hunting. Earth magic is strongest in Terravern, though humans themselves cannot wield it.
-
Terravernian society is rooted in collectivity and interdependence, with close-knit villages peppering the countryside. The people of Terravern are passionate about the earth, nurturing nature and building their homes and infrastructure around it, instead of bending nature to their will. They pass stories, stewardship, and trades down their family lines. They enjoy a positive relationship with their Dunovarian neighbours, with whom they boast a long-standing tradition of academic and agricultural exchange and trade. Relations with the fae of Vaelora are cordial but strained, with Terravernians disapproving of the Vaeloran’s use of elemental magic to manipulate nature to serve their needs. As with most realms, Terravern also has a poor relationship with the hostile shifters of Askeldrath, its raids and scorched-earth tactics clashing fundamentally with Terravernian values.
